Core Biopsy

A breast core biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure used to obtain tissue samples from a suspicious area in the breast. It is typically recommended when imaging (such as mammogram, ultrasound, or MRI) reveals an abnormality, or when a lump is felt during a clinical exam.

Using a spring-loaded needle, small cores of tissue are collected under local anaesthetic. These samples are sent to pathology to determine whether the abnormality is benign or requires further treatment.

When Is It Recommended?

  • Core biopsy is considered best practice in Australia for evaluating:
  • Solid breast lumps, even if they appear benign
  • Microcalcifications or architectural distortions seen on imaging
  • Triple test assessment
  • Unlike fine needle aspiration (FNA), core biopsy provides more tissue for a definitive diagnosis, reducing the need for repeat procedures.

Benefits of Core Biopsy

  • Accurate diagnosis without surgery
  •  Quick recovery and minimal downtime
  • Low risk of complications
  • Supports personalised treatment planning
  • Marker clip placement ensures precise follow-up and surgical guidance

Procedure Overview

  • Performed under local anaesthetic
  • Guided by ultrasound, or mammography (stereotactic)
  • A tiny marker clip may be placed at the biopsy site for future reference
  • Most patients report mild pressure or discomfort, not sharp pain during the procedure.

Aftercare & Recovery

  • Mild bruising or swelling may occur
  • Avoid strenuous activity for 48 hours
  • Keep the biopsy site clean and dry for 3 days
  • Panadol (paracetamol) may be taken for discomfort (avoid aspirin)
  • Results are typically available within 2–4 working days

Cost

  • In Australia, Medicare rebates apply for breast core biopsies when referred by a healthcare provider. Rebates may vary depending on:
  • The type of biopsy (core vs. vacuum-assisted)
  • The clinical indication
  • Whether the patient meets Medicare Safety Net thresholds
  • Patients with a family history, dense breasts, or symptomatic findings are often eligible. Always check with your referring doctor or our booking staff for the cost and rebate details.
